The Shadow Of Phobos
NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE
Mars Global Surveyor captured the oval shadow of Phobos racing over Xanthe Terra on August 26, 1999. Phobos, shaped like a potato, orbits Mars in less than eight hours. Because its orbital period is shorter than Mars's rotation, observers on Mars see Phobos rise in the west and set in the east.
