1999 Leonid Fireball

NASA APOD · Arne Danielsen
COSMIC MESSAGE

Even tiny bits of comet debris, ranging from a millimeter to a centimeter, can create a spectacular show. These Leonid meteoroids enter Earth's atmosphere at 71 kilometers per second. The immense speed causes collisions with air molecules, stripping electrons from atoms and generating light. This fireball, captured over Arizona, demonstrates the surprising brilliance of these small cosmic travelers.
