COSMIC MESSAGE
This topographical map of Mars's southern hemisphere was created using data from the Mars Orbiter Laser Altimeter (MOLA) on the Mars Global Surveyor spacecraft. MOLA bounced laser beams off the surface over 200 million times to measure elevations. The white areas in the southern Tharsis region indicate the highest elevations, not snow-covered peaks.
