COSMIC MESSAGE
On March 1, 2000, a tremendous explosion occurred across the universe, detected by RXTE, Ulysses, and NEAR. This event was a gamma-ray burst, a short, intense flash of high-energy radiation. Within 48 hours, astronomers used the 2.5-meter Nordic Optical Telescope to find an optical counterpart. This image shows the afterglow of that burst, a fading beacon from across the cosmos.
