What is inside Mars? The Mars Global Surveyor spacecraft has been mapping the planet from orbit since 1997. Its cameras cannot see beneath the surface, but its radio science experiments can. Tiny changes in the spacecraft's orbit are caused by gravity variations, which reveal density changes in the planet's interior. This image maps those gravity variations, showing us what Mars is like on the inside.
