M20: The Trifid Nebula

NASA APOD · Todd Boroson
COSMIC MESSAGE

The Trifid Nebula, also known as M20, is a star-forming region in Sagittarius. High-energy starlight from newly formed stars excites hydrogen gas, causing it to glow red. Dark dust lanes, formed in the atmospheres of cool giant stars and supernova debris, weave through the nebula.
