Giant Cluster Bends, Breaks Images
NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE
Many of those strange blue objects are images of a single, unusual, beaded, blue, ring-like galaxy. It just happens to line up behind a giant cluster of yellow galaxies. This cluster, along with its dark matter, acts as a gravitational lens. A gravitational lens can create multiple images of background galaxies, much like looking through a wine glass at a distant street light.
