NASA APOD · D. Malin (AAO), AATB
COSMIC MESSAGE

Shapley 1 is a planetary nebula, the remains of a star that has shed its outer layers. It sits in the constellation Norma, about a thousand light years away. This particular nebula shows a clear ring structure, appearing like a cosmic smoke ring. The central white dwarf star, once the core of a Sun-like star, is now cooling and fading.
