The Milky Way Near the Southern Cross

NASA APOD · Greg Bock, Southern Astronomical Society
COSMIC MESSAGE

Near the South Pole, the Southern Cross, or Crux, stands out against the Milky Way. The bright orange star Gamma Crucis marks the top of the constellation. Our galaxy's band of stars, dust, and gas stretches across the image. The dark Coal Sack Nebula is prominent in the center, a region where dense dust clouds obscure starlight.
