The Crab Nebula in Blue and White

NASA APOD · Jay Gallagher (U. Wisc.), WIYN, AURA, NOAO, NSF
COSMIC MESSAGE

The Crab Nebula, also known as M1, is the remnant of a star that exploded about 1,000 years ago. This two-color image from the WIYN 3.5-meter telescope shows the intricate filamentary structure of the glowing hydrogen gas. At its heart is a neutron star, a city-sized object as massive as our Sun, that spins thirty times a second and emits a powerful beam of energy.
