The Ecliptic Plane

This image from the Clementine spacecraft shows the ecliptic plane, the imaginary plane containing Earth's orbit around the Sun. From right to left, you can see the Moon lit by Earthshine, the Sun's corona, and the planets Saturn, Mars, and Mercury. The Sun's apparent path through the sky traces this plane over a year.
