This 60-kopek stamp celebrates a Soviet achievement: Luna 3 photographed the far side of the Moon on October 7, 1959. This gave Earth its first view of that hidden hemisphere. Luna 3 used 35mm film, which was developed on board, then scanned, and the signal transmitted back to Earth. It was a dramatic step in lunar exploration.
