The SAR Arc and the Milky Way

NASA APOD · Julien Looten
COSMIC MESSAGE

A Stable Auroral Red (SAR) arc is a rare phenomenon. It appears as a broad, luminous red band in the night sky. This particular SAR arc was observed over northern France, extending toward the zenith. SAR arcs are distinct from the more dynamic auroral displays and appear at unusually low latitudes during intense geomagnetic storms.
