NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

Earth's surface is broken by faults, cracks in the crust that can run for hundreds of kilometers. These faults are often the sites of major earthquakes as tectonic plates shift. The San Andreas Fault in California, pictured here, is one of the longest and most active. It reaches 15 kilometers deep and is about 20 million years old.
