The Horsehead Nebula, Barnard 33, is a dark cloud of interstellar dust sculpted by stellar winds and radiation. It is part of the vast star-forming region surrounding the Orion Nebula, about 1,500 light-years distant. The Horsehead is visible only because it is silhouetted against the bright emission nebulae behind it.
