The Crab Nebula from VLT
NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE
The Crab Nebula, what's left of a star that exploded in 1054 AD, still expands at a thousand miles per second. The Very Large Telescope captured this image, showing mysterious filaments that appear to have less mass and higher speed than expected from the original supernova. This remnant, about 6,500 light-years away in Taurus, glows across the electromagnetic spectrum.
