NGC 2264: Stars, Dust, and Gas

NASA APOD · Michael Bessell (RSAA, ANU), MSO
COSMIC MESSAGE

The nebula around the bright star S Monocerotis, part of the larger NGC 2264, is filled with dark dust and glowing gas. The strange shapes in this star-forming region come from interstellar dust interacting with light and hot gas from young stars. NGC 2264 is about 2,500 light-years away and also contains the Cone Nebula. The blue glow around S Monocerotis is reflected starlight.
