The Center of the Circinus Galaxy in X-Rays

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

X-rays pour out from the center of the Circinus galaxy, and the Chandra X-ray Observatory shows us why. This high-resolution image resolves the inner regions of the galaxy into several smaller sources. The extended X-ray emission from the center matches optical light, which is consistent with hot gas escaping from a supermassive black hole at the galaxy's core.
