NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE
Comet Hale-Bopp, captured here over the Dolomite mountains in Italy, was a spectacular sight in 1997. Its blue ion tail forms when solar wind particles hit ions from the comet's nucleus. The white dust tail is made of larger particles, reflecting sunlight. This comet was so bright it was visible even over city lights.
