Tycho and Copernicus: Lunar Ray Craters

NASA APOD · Steve Mandel, Hidden Valley Observatory
COSMIC MESSAGE

The Moon is covered in impact craters, which are dramatic during partial phases due to shadows. But during a full Moon, some craters display bright ray systems. These rays, like those from Copernicus and Tycho, are light-colored debris blasted out during the impact event.
