Emission and Reflection in NGC 6559
NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE
Bright gas and dark dust fill the space between stars in the nebula NGC 6559. The diffuse red glow comes from hydrogen gas, an emission nebula. Energetic light from nearby stars ionizes the interstellar hydrogen, and as protons and electrons recombine, they emit specific colors of light, including red. Small dust particles reflect blue starlight, creating the blue reflection nebulosity seen near two bright stars.
