COSMIC MESSAGE

Bits of comet dust from the Leonids meteor shower enter Earth's atmosphere at 70 kilometers per second, vaporizing at about 100 kilometers altitude. This five-minute exposure captures three Leonid meteors above Spruce Knob, West Virginia. These meteors are much faster than returning space shuttles, which enter the atmosphere at 8 kilometers per second.
