A Sun Pillar in Red and Violet

NASA APOD · Jim Kirkpatrick & Brigitte Heiter-Kirkpatrick
COSMIC MESSAGE

Sometimes, sunlight interacting with ice crystals in the atmosphere creates beautiful optical phenomena. This image, taken near Lake Tahoe, Nevada, shows a sun pillar. This red column of light rises mysteriously from a setting sun, created when sunlight reflects off hexagonal ice crystals in the air. The phenomenon was captured by amateur photographers in February 2000.
