Under A Sunspot

COSMIC MESSAGE
Sunspots are dark, planet-sized regions on the Sun's surface with intense magnetic fields. Using data from the Michelson Doppler Imager (MDI) instrument on the SOHO observatory, astronomers have mapped the flow of material beneath a visible sunspot. The MDI observations indicate a strong inflowing current directly under the sunspot, shown by dark arrows. This converging undertow pulls near-surface material into the sunspot.
