SOHO Comet 367: Sungrazer

This sungrazing comet, number 367, was one of many discovered by the SOHO spacecraft. SOHO, positioned a million and a half kilometers sunward of Earth, is the most prolific comet-discovering instrument in history. This image captures the comet plunging toward the Sun, its tail streaming away. The frames were taken hours apart on October 23, 2001.
