Catching Falling Stardust

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

This carrot-shaped track, just five hundredths of an inch long, is the trail of a meteoroid through aerogel. The aerogel was exposed to space by the EURECA spacecraft, launched by the Space Shuttle. This meteoroid, like those in the Leonids shower, is about a thousandth of an inch in diameter. It came to rest at the tip of the carrot, visible in the image.
