A Glowing STEVE and the Milky Way
NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE
Long, glowing streaks in the sky, known as STEVEs, are still a mystery. These luminous, light-purple ribbons resemble auroras but show significant differences in their precise measurements. STEVEs may be related to subauroral ion drifts, a supersonic river of hot atmospheric ions. Some STEVEs are also accompanied by a green picket fence structure.
