NGC 3314: When Galaxies Overlap

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

NGC 3314 is a rare alignment of two spiral galaxies, one directly in front of the other. The foreground galaxy, NGC 3314a, appears face-on, its spiral arms and bright star clusters silhouetted against the glow of the more distant background galaxy. This Hubble image offers a unique perspective, allowing us to see through one galaxy to another. It's a chance alignment that helps astronomers study the structure of these distant systems.
