Extra-Solar Planetary Atmosphere Detected
NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE
Humanity has taken a step toward finding extraterrestrial life by directly detecting a planetary atmosphere outside our solar system. The Hubble Space Telescope observed star HD 209458 as its orbiting planet passed in front of it. Sodium in the planet's atmosphere absorbed specific colors of starlight, allowing astronomers to identify its composition. This planet, discovered two years prior, is about 70 percent the mass of Jupiter.
