Volcano and Aurora in Iceland
NASA APOD · Sigurdur H. Stefnisson
COSMIC MESSAGE
In 1991, Iceland's Hekla volcano erupted at the same time that auroras were visible overhead. Hekla is one of the world's most famous volcanoes, with a long history of eruptions. The green auroral band appeared about 100 kilometers above the erupting lava. This simultaneous display of terrestrial and atmospheric phenomena created a dramatic scene.
