This composite image of 3C296 shows jets of plasma streaming from the central black hole of the elliptical galaxy NGC 5532. These jets are nearly a million light-years long. After leaving the galaxy, the jets inflate large radio bubbles that can glow for millions of years. Scientists are still studying how the central black hole expels this matter.
