M27: Not A Comet

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

Messier 27, also known as the Dumbbell Nebula, is a planetary nebula, the remains of a sun-like star. It's not a planet, and it's not a comet, though Charles Messier, cataloging non-comets in the 18th century, called it number 27. The star's outer layers have expanded into space, glowing as the core collapses into a white dwarf. This nebula is about 1,360 light-years away in the constellation Vulpecula.
