Bright Galaxy M81
NASA APOD · Robert Gendler
COSMIC MESSAGE
M81 is a large, beautiful spiral galaxy in Ursa Major, one of the brightest galaxies visible from Earth. This detailed view shows its bright nucleus, grand spiral arms, and sweeping cosmic dust lanes. A remarkable dust lane runs straight through the disk, below and to the right of the galactic center. This suggests a disorderly past for M81, which is comparable in scale to the Milky Way.
