Carving Ma'adim Vallis
Ma'adim Vallis, one of the largest canyons on Mars, may have been carved by a river of floodwater, much like the Colorado River carved Earth's Grand Canyon. Data from the Mars Orbiter Laser Altimeter (MOLA) experiment on the Mars Global Surveyor spacecraft supports this idea. This false-color topographical map shows a vast complex of ancient lakes that are thought to have fed the flood. This evidence points to a past with significant liquid water on the Martian surface.
