The Sun's Heliosphere & Heliopause

NASA APOD · P. C. Frisch (U. Chicago) et al., U. Indiana
COSMIC MESSAGE

The heliosphere is the region where the Sun's magnetic field and particles from the solar wind dominate. This computer-generated illustration shows the termination shock, the inner oval, where the solar wind drops below sound speed. It is thought to occur as close as 75 to 90 AU from the Sun. Pioneer and Voyager spacecraft have provided direct measurements from this distant frontier, helping us understand the boundary of our solar system.
