M51: X-Rays from the Whirlpool
NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE
The Whirlpool Galaxy, a pair of interacting galaxies, is shown here in X-rays by the Chandra X-ray Observatory. The image reveals over 80 glittering X-ray sources. This number of luminous X-ray sources, likely neutron star and black hole binary systems, is unusually high for normal spiral or elliptical galaxies. This suggests the interaction between the galaxies may be influencing the formation of these energetic systems.
