The Crab Nebula from VLT
NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE
The Crab Nebula, a result of a star explosion observed in 1054 AD, is filled with mysterious filaments. Chinese and Anasazi Indian astronomers recorded this spectacular supernova. The filaments are puzzling because they appear to have less mass than expected from the original supernova, and higher speeds than a free explosion. This image from the Very Large Telescope uses color to show the electron behavior within the nebula.
