The Earth's Magnetic Field

NASA APOD · Gary A. Glatzmaier (UCSC)
COSMIC MESSAGE

The Earth's magnetic field, which protects us from solar radiation, is generated by the movement of molten iron in our planet's outer core. As cooler, denser fluid sinks and warmer, less dense fluid rises, it creates convection currents. These currents, combined with Earth's rotation, act like a giant dynamo, sustaining the magnetic field.
