RX J1856.5-3754 is the closest known neutron star, about 180 light-years away. It formed from the collapsed core of an exploding star. This tiny, dense star, only 20 kilometers across but more massive than the Sun, travels through interstellar space at about 200 kilometers per second. Its surface is incredibly hot, around 700,000 degrees Celsius, making it detectable by X-ray telescopes.
