These two solar prominences, captured by the EIT camera on board SOHO, are eruptions of cool, dense plasma held aloft by magnetic fields. They are seen in extreme ultraviolet light, arcing above the Sun's southern hemisphere. When viewed against the blackness of space, these structures appear bright.
