COSMIC MESSAGE
This celestial nebula, M106, was discovered in 1781 by Pierre Mechain in Canes Venatici. Modern deep telescopic views reveal it to be a spiral galaxy, about 30 thousand light-years across. It is located only about 21 million light-years beyond the stars of the Milky Way. Youthful blue star clusters and pink star-forming regions trace the spiral arms. M106 also shows evidence of an active central supermassive black hole.
