Dumbbell Nebula Halo
NASA APOD · Robert Gendler
COSMIC MESSAGE
Charles Messier first cataloged the Dumbbell Nebula, M27, in 1764, describing it as an oval nebula without stars. It's a planetary nebula, the remains of a star like our Sun that shed its outer layers. This deep image shows the nebula's central star and its elongated, dumbbell-like shape. It's about 1,360 light-years away in the constellation Vulpecula.
