Galactic Supernova Remnant IC 443
NASA APOD · Jean-Charles Cuillandre
COSMIC MESSAGE
About 8,000 years ago, a star in our galaxy exploded, creating the supernova remnant IC 443. Modern humans can still see the expanding shell of gas. This image shows complex filaments within the shell, some of which are impacting an existing molecular cloud. Astronomers use emission from shock-excited molecular hydrogen to study how fast-moving supernova gas affects star formation in the cloud.
