Periodic comet 73P/Schwassmann-Wachmann 3 has broken up at least twice. This comet, a mix of ice and dust from the early solar system, first split into several pieces in 1995. Then, in 2006, it disintegrated into dozens of fragments that spread across several degrees of the sky. Comets are fragile, and heat, gravity, and outgassing can cause them to break apart.
