X-Ray Rings Expand from a Gamma Ray Burst

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

X-ray rings expanding from a gamma-ray burst are not from the explosion itself. Instead, they are light reflected off sheets of dust and gas in our own Milky Way Galaxy. GRB 031203 was a powerful gamma-ray burst that occurred far across the universe. Its X-rays arrived simultaneously with the gamma rays, scattering off galactic dust and creating these expanding rings.
