Comet NEAT (Q4) Over Indian Cove

NASA APOD · Wally Pacholka (Astropics)
COSMIC MESSAGE

Comet NEAT (C/2001 Q4) was a prominent sight in early May 2004. While its head and part of its tail were visible to the unaided eye, cameras with long exposure times revealed more detail. This image, taken with a thirty-second exposure, shows a long blue ion tail and a blue coma around the comet's nucleus. The colors in comet tails are due to different gases and dust particles fluorescing under sunlight.
