Moon Between the Stones
NASA APOD · Philip Perkins
COSMIC MESSAGE
During a total lunar eclipse in May, astronomer Phillip Perkins captured this image of the reddened Moon rising over Stonehenge. The Moon was low on the horizon, positioned perfectly through a gap in the ancient stones. The red hue is caused by Earth's atmosphere scattering sunlight into the Moon's shadow. This photograph merges celestial mechanics with an iconic historical monument.
