Comet NEAT and the Beehive Cluster

NASA APOD · Jimmy Westlake (Colorado Mountain College)
COSMIC MESSAGE

Comet C/2001 Q4 (NEAT) passed in front of the Beehive Cluster (M44) in 2004. While both appeared as fuzzy patches to the unaided eye, binoculars and cameras revealed their differences. The comet showed details of its coma and tail, while the distant Beehive Cluster displayed its many stars. Comet Q4 has since faded, but the encounter was a dramatic celestial event.
