Two Comets in Southern Skies

NASA APOD · Gordon Garradd
COSMIC MESSAGE

On May 20, 2004, two comets were visible in the southern skies. Comet C/2002 T7 (LINEAR) and Comet C/2001 Q4 (NEAT) were captured by astronomer Gordon Garradd in New South Wales, Australia. Both comets displayed extended tails streaming away from the Sun. These tails are formed as solar radiation and particles push dust and gas away from the comet's nucleus.
