M57, the Ring Nebula, is a planetary nebula, a shell of gas shed by a dying central star. This wide view combines three exposures to show the inner, one-light-year span of the nebula and its fainter outer rings of glowing hydrogen. The image also captures a rich assortment of distant background galaxies.
